ME-Series  Cleaning Recommendations

ME™-Series Nafion dryers are packaged nonsterile. If sterilization is required, gamma radiation is recommended. This method will not change the drying performance of the device. The following list contains methods NOT recommended for use with ME-Series Nafion dryers.

Ethylene Oxide - The water vapor present in ethylene oxide gas mixture may produce ethylene glycol when in contact with Nafion. Ethylene glycol will clog and damage the dryer and is not recommended as a sterilization method.

Steam - Steam sterilization at high temperatures will produce excess swelling of the Nafion tubing and possible thermal or mechanical failure of the polypropylene fittings and braiding. Steam sterilization is not recommended.

Liquid sterilization - Liquid sterilization and cleaning with commercial disinfectants is not recommended as these products contain chemicals that reduce the drying efficiency of the Nafion tubing. Active bactericides present in these products, such as glutaraldehyde, do not react with Nafion. Salts in the bactericide mixture will convert the active from of Nafion to a less active form and therefore reduce the drying efficiency. Liquid sterilization of ME dryers are not recommended.

Single-use application of the dryer is recommendation for safety and efficiency during patient breath monitoring. If the same dryer is used for multiple operations, liquid cleaning procedures should not be used. The efficient performance of patient gas monitors is directly related to gas drying of the patient breath.
