Nafion™ Tubing Prevents Previously Unrecognized Error in SO2 Gas Analysis

By attending this presentation, you will learn that accurate measurements become more difficult as SO₂ emissions levels decrease.  Furthermore, you will discover that for cold extractive continuous emissions monitoring systems (CEMS), upgrading the sample conditioning system from a condensing cooler to a permeation dryer can yield significant improvements in SO₂ retention in the sample stream, and more accurate measurements.  This system substitution is vital for SO₂ analyses due to the loss of soluble analytes in the condensed water in alternate conditioning systems.  Additionally, by decreasing the water content while maintaining the concentration of SO₂ in the gaseous sample, simpler analysis methods can be used, which is advantageous for both regulatory bodies and industry professionals.  For example, improvements in accuracy of FTIR analysis of SO₂ were seen by using Nafion™ tubing conditioning systems.
Lab and field data for SO₂ retention will be presented for Nafion™ tubing -based systems showing excellent performance at low levels of SO₂ and high moisture content.  Experience and data from different installations will be shared along with updated results from on-going research.
